Quercus buckleyi, commonly known as Buckley oak, or Texas Red Oak, is native to the south central US, from southern Texas through north central Oklahoma. It is a large tree reaching a height of up to 60 feet. Its growth rate is moderate.

Leaves, Stems and Fruit
Leaves have smooth petioles of a length from 3/4" - 1 3/4". Leaves are broadly elliptical, up to 4 inches long and 4 3/8" wide, truncate base with 7-9 lobes and 12-35 awns. Twigs are smooth and vary from gray to reddish brown with apical scales 1/4" in length. Acorns are borne biennially with cup scales smooth to sparsely pubescent, inner surface smooth, covering 1/3 to 1/2 of nut.


Use
Wood- The wood of Buckley oak is used for fuelwood and posts

Wildlife - Acorns of this tree are eaten by squirrels, deer and turkey.

Adaptation and Soil
Buckley oak prefers full sun, and can be encountered on dry limestone ridges, slopes and creek bottoms in the southern Plains states. It is drought tolerant and prefers alkaline soils.

Spacing
Normally spacing is 8 to 18 feet.

Culture
Seedlings are one year old and approximately 14-24" tall. Weeds should be controlled within a 2' radius of the tree for the first 2-3 years. Seedling growth often responds to supplemental watering and will be dependent on soil type and precipitation during estabishment.
