25 plants per unit
Amelanchier arborea, or Serviceberry is native to Kansas. It can reach 15-25 feet in height tall. Growth rate is medium.
Use
Windbreaks - Multi-stemmed growth habit makes this useful as either a tall shrub or small -tree component of a shelterbelt. Spring flowers and fall foliage color can make any windscreen more attractive.
Wildlife Habitat - Excellent plant for pollinators and bird habitat. Fruit is edible by humans if you can beat the birds to it!
Adaptation and Soil
Serviceberry is adapted to most soils, even clay. Tolerates moderate shade and drought.
Spacing
Space this tree 6-8 feet apart in most plantings. Space determines how soon they grow together, and they are not negatively affected by being close.
Culture
One- or two year-old, bare-root seedlings, (10 to 14 inches tall) are used in conservation plantings. Controlling competing vegetation is critical in establishment.
Pests
Various foliar fungal diseases (rust, leaf spot, blight, pwdery mildew) and insects (scale, leaf miner, sawflies) may affect the platns, but the damage is only cosmetic. Overall health of the shrub is generally unaffected.
